Children’s Choice Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics in New Carrollton, MD offers dental treatment for children of all ages from infants and toddlers to children and adolescents.
Infants and Toddlers
It is never too early to think about dental health. Even infants should be made accustomed to having their gums cleaned by their parents after they eat. From before the first teeth break through the gums to when they start eating solid food, oral hygiene is essential. Teething can be very painful and our practice can offer tips for soothing a teething baby. Other pitfalls for this age group include tooth decay from sugary drinks and snacks along with trauma and other habits.
We recommend that you bring your child for his or her first dental visit at one year of age. As teeth come in, they should be cleaned with a toothbrush. The proper amount of toothpaste is a smear for children less than 3 years of age and a pea size for children older than 3.
Children ages 3-11 should be brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily and having dental check-ups every six months. During these years, baby teeth will be replaced by permanent adult teeth and must be cared for from the start. Good dental care habits last a lifetime and so should your teeth.
Now is the time to address cavity prevention, bite abnormalities, fluoride needs and proper brushing and flossing techniques. Our professional dental staff will assess your child’s needs and provide preventative care and treatment.
Children aged 11-18 usually have a lot more on their minds than their teeth but they also want their smiles to look great. These years are filled with lots of physical changes and gingivitis, periodontal disease and cavities are all concerns. We talk to you and our adolescent patients about their concerns along with avoiding cavities, good nutrition as well as teeth straightening and whitening options.
Children with special needs require dental care like everyone else and we have the resources to provide it.
